Bio
Jerry W. Askew is Senior Vice President for Governmental Relations at Tennova Healthcare and Director of Governmental Relations for Tennova’s parent company, Health Management Associates. In these roles, he is responsible for HMA’s strategic advocacy activities in seven states.
Prior to joining Tennova’s predecessor, St. Mary’s Health System, in 2001, he served as President and CEO of the East Tennessee Foundation.
Jerry’s career in Knoxville began in 1985 when he was appointed Dean of Students at the University of Tennessee. He went on to serve as Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs while holding adjunct faculty appointments in the College of Education and the University’s Honors Program. Prior to coming to Knoxville, Jerry served in administrative posts at the University of Miami and The Ohio State University. Jerry has twice been a finalist for the Presidency of the University of Tennessee System.
Jerry received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar; his M.S. from the University of Memphis; and his Ph.D. from Ohio State, where he was a Thomas C. Holy Fellow.
Jerry has been active in a variety of community endeavors since his arrival in Knoxville, serving on the boards of over 40 non-profit organizations at the local, state and national levels.
Jerry and his wife Robyn, an attorney, have two children—son, Taylor (24), a law student at the University of Tennessee and daughter Avery (20), a junior at UT. The Askews are active members of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Knoxville.
